Trauma-Informed Care Training for Nursery Staff

“A trauma informed and responsive nation and workforce, that is capable of recognising where people are affected by trauma and adversity, that is able to respond in ways that prevent further harm and support recovery and can address inequalities and improve life chances”.

National Trauma Training Programme Scotland 2021.

Overview: This Trauma Informed Nursery Care training is designed to raise awareness of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the importance of trauma-informed care. It provides nursery staff with essential knowledge and practical tools to support young children who may have experienced trauma. By learning how early trauma impacts children’s development and behaviour, nursery staff can create a nurturing environment that promotes healing and resilience.

Why It Matters: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can significantly impact a child’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Understanding these experiences helps nursery staff recognize the signs of trauma and respond in ways that reduce stress, build trust, and create a supportive atmosphere for children.

Who Should Attend

This training is specifically designed for nursery staff, including:

  • Nursery practitioners
  • Early years educators
  • Teaching assistants
  • Childcare workers

Key Learning Points:

  • Understanding ACEs: Learn about the types of adverse experiences that can affect a child’s development, such as neglect, abuse, or family difficulties.
  • The Impact of Trauma on Development: Understand how toxic stress affects brain development and can influence a child’s emotions, behaviour, and relationships.
  • Recognising Signs of Trauma: Gain skills to identify behaviours that may signal a child has experienced trauma, such as difficulty regulating emotions, withdrawal, or aggression.
  • Responding with Care: Discover practical ways to create a trauma-informed nursery environment where children feel safe, supported, and able to thrive.
  • Building Resilience: Learn techniques to help children build resilience and self-regulation, allowing them to cope with stress in healthier ways.

Why It’s Important for Nursery Staff: Children in nursery settings may not have the words to express their trauma, but their behaviours often tell a story. By understanding ACEs and adopting trauma-informed approaches, nursery staff can:

  • Create emotionally safe spaces that encourage healing.
  • Foster positive relationships that help children trust and connect with others.
  • Develop coping strategies that promote long-term emotional well-being.

Training Focus Areas:

  • Identifying common signs of childhood trauma.
  • Strategies for managing difficult behaviours with compassion.
  • Techniques to support children in regulating their emotions.
  • Building strong, positive relationships with children to help buffer the effects of trauma.

This training is aligned with the Scottish Government’s emphasis on raising awareness of ACEs and supporting professionals in mitigating the long-term effects of early childhood trauma. Nursery staff play a vital role in providing early support that can make a lifelong difference in children’s lives.
